You Are Not Allowed to Record This Video Call (Google Meet): Why and How to Fix It

If Google Meet says you're not allowed to record this video call, it's because Google's Record button only works when three things line up: a plan that includes recording (free Gmail and Business Starter don't), an admin who has turned recording on, and permission in this meeting (the host, a co-host, or someone in the host's organization with Host Management off). You can't change most of that from your seat, so ask the host to record or to make you a co-host, ask your admin to turn recording on, or record the call yourself with Scribbl's Chrome extension, which works on free Gmail and when you're not the host, with no bot in the call.

Below: every reason Google blocks recording, the fix for each one, and how to record the call anyway. Every Google fact here was checked against Google's help pages on October 19, 2026.

Why Google Meet says you're not allowed to record this video call

Google's troubleshooting page lists "you aren't allowed to record a specific video meeting" as one reason recording is turned off. That covers several different situations. Find yours:

   Business Standard, Business Plus, Essentials, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Starter, Standard or Plus, Education Plus, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Workspace Individual, or Google One with 2 TB or more? If you're on free Gmail or Business Starter, Google's Record button never appears.

Which Google plans can record a Google Meet

Recording is a paid feature. Google lists these plans as able to record a meeting:

• Google Workspace: Business Standard, Business Plus, Essentials, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus
• Education: Education Plus (staff license) and the Teaching and Learning Upgrade (license)
• Personal: Workspace Individual, and Google One with 2 TB of storage or more

Not included: free personal Gmail accounts and Business Starter. On these, there's no toggle to flip and no permission to ask for. The Record button simply isn't there. Your choices are to pay for a plan that includes it, have someone on such a plan host and record, or record with Scribbl, whose free plan works on a free Gmail account.

Who in a Google Meet call is allowed to record

Even on the right plan, Google only lets certain people in the call record:

• The host.
• Co-hosts, including someone from outside the host's organization whom the host made a co-host.
• Anyone in the host's organization, as long as Host Management is off.
• Teachers and co-teachers in Google Classroom meetings.

Two rules catch people out. First, if the host doesn't have permission to record, nobody in the meeting can, even people whose own plans include recording. Second, people from outside the host's organization can't record unless the host makes them a co-host. That's the usual reason a guest in a client's or partner's meeting is told they're not allowed to record.

How to turn on Google Meet recording as an admin

On a Workspace plan, recording has to be allowed in the Google Admin console before anyone sees the button. If you're not the admin, send them this:

Could you turn on Google Meet recording for our team? In the Google
Admin console:

  Menu > Apps > Google Workspace > Google Meet > Meet video settings
  > Recording > check "Let people record their meetings" > Save

After the change, give it time. Google says changes can take up to 24 hours, though they usually happen sooner.

How to fix it, depending on who you are

You're a guest in someone else's meeting. Ask the host to record, or to make you a co-host. The recording is saved to the meeting organizer's Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder, so ask them to share it afterward. If you need your own copy, or the host can't record either, record it with Scribbl.

You're in the host's organization and Record is unavailable. The host probably turned on Host Management. Ask them to let people record, or to make you a co-host.

You're on free Gmail or Business Starter. Google's recorder isn't part of your plan. Upgrade, ask a colleague on a qualifying plan to host and record, or use Scribbl.

You're the host on a paid plan and still can't record. Ask your admin to turn recording on (above), check that Google Drive is on for your account, and make sure you're not in a breakout room or joined only to present.

You're on an iPhone or iPad. Google says you can only record on a computer or an Android device. Join from a computer.

Recording starts but there's no file. Recordings are saved to the organizer's Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder, not to the Drive of whoever pressed Record. The organizer and the person who started the recording get an email with the link, and the link is added to the Calendar event. A single recording stops after 8 hours. Record the call anyway with Scribbl

Tell people you're recording

Whatever you record with, tell people before you start. Recording laws differ by place: some let one person in the conversation consent, others need everyone's consent. This isn't legal advice, but the safe habit is the same everywhere: say it at the start of the call and give people the chance to say no. Something like: "I'd like to record this call so I have accurate notes. Is everyone OK with that?"

Google's own recorder notifies everyone when recording starts and stops. Since May 2026, Workspace admins can also require people to agree before recording, transcripts or Gemini notes start; it's off by default. FAQ

Why does Google Meet say I'm not allowed to record this video call?

Because Google's recorder only works when your plan includes recording, your admin has turned it on, and you have permission in that meeting. Free Gmail and Business Starter can't record at all. On a paid plan, only the host, co-hosts and people in the host's organization (when the host hasn't turned on Host Management) can record, and if the host's own account can't record, nobody in the meeting can. Ask the host to record or to make you a co-host, or record the call with Scribbl's Chrome extension.

Why can't I record on Google Meet?

The usual reasons, in order: your account is free Gmail or Business Starter, which don't include recording; your admin hasn't turned recording on; you're not the host, a co-host or in the host's organization; or you're on an iPhone or iPad, where Google's recorder doesn't work. Breakout rooms, Google Drive being off and meetings created by a conference room device also block it.

Can I record a Google Meet if I'm not the host?

With Google's recorder, only if the host's account can record and you're a co-host, or you're in the host's organization and Host Management is off. Guests from other companies can't record unless the host makes them a co-host. Scribbl's Chrome extension doesn't use Google's recorder, so it records the call for any participant, with no bot joining. Either way, tell people you're recording.

Can I record a Google Meet on a free Gmail account?

Not with Google's recorder. Free Gmail has no Record button, because recording needs Google Workspace Business Standard or higher, Workspace Individual, or a Google One plan with 2 TB or more. My admin turned recording on. Why can't I record?

Google says the change can take up to 24 hours, so try again later. Turning recording on also doesn't make everyone a recorder: you still need to be the host, a co-host, or in the host's organization with Host Management off. And it never works on an iPhone or iPad, or in a breakout room.

Why can't I record a Google Meet on my iPhone?

Google's recorder only works on a computer or an Android device. There is no Record button in the Meet app on iPhone or iPad, and no setting adds one. Join from a computer instead, where you can use Google's recorder if your plan allows it, or Scribbl's Chrome extension if it doesn't.

How do I let someone else record my Google Meet?

Make them a co-host. Co-hosts can record, including people from outside your organization. People in your own organization can record as long as Host Management is off. This only works if your own account is allowed to record.
