Google Meet transcription is a paid Google Workspace feature: on a computer, click Meeting tools, then Transcribe, then Start transcription, and Google Meet saves the transcript as a Google Doc in the meeting organizer's Drive. Google Meet transcription isn't on free Gmail or Business Starter, guests from other companies can't start it, and a Google Meet recording has no transcript unless someone pressed Transcribe during the call. Scribbl gives you a transcript with speaker names of every Google Meet you join, with the video and AI notes, in your own Scribbl account, on free Gmail or as a guest, with nothing joining the call.

This guide covers which plans have Google Meet transcripts, how to turn them on, where the transcript goes, and what to do on free Gmail or when you're not the host. Every Google fact below was checked on Google's help pages on October 12, 2026.

Which Google Workspace plans have Google Meet transcription

The cheapest business plan with transcripts is Business Standard, listed at $14 per user per month on an annual plan (Google Workspace pricing). Transcripts work in eight languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.

What matters is the host's plan, not yours. If a colleague on Business Standard hosts the call, the Transcribe button can show up for people in that colleague's organization. If the host is on free Gmail, nobody in the call has it.

If you're on free Gmail or Business Starter, skip to Google Meet transcription on free Gmail.

How to turn on Google Meet transcription

You can start a transcript on a computer, laptop or Android device. iPhone and iPad can't start one.

  1. 1

    Join the meeting

Open the Meet call on your computer.

  2. 2

    Click Meeting tools

It's at the bottom right of the call.

  3. 3

    Click Transcribe, then Start transcription

    In the pop-up, click Start.

  4. 4

    Stop it when you're done

Click Meeting tools, Transcribing, Stop transcription, then Stop. It also stops by itself when everyone leaves.

Start a Google Meet transcript on a computer Steps from Google Meet Help, checked October 12, 2026. Everyone in the call is told when the transcript starts.

On Android: in the Meet app, tap More at the bottom right, then Tools, then Transcribe, then Start. To stop, tap More, Tools, Transcribing, Stop.

To transcribe a meeting automatically: when you create the meeting in Google Calendar, click Video call options, then Meeting records, and select Transcribe the meeting.

Who can press it: if Host management is off, anyone from the host's domain can turn on transcripts. If it's on, only the host and co-hosts can.

For admins: transcripts are on by default for supported plans. To change it, go to the Google Admin console, then Apps, Google Workspace, Google Meet, Meet video settings, Meeting transcripts. On Business Standard you can't turn the feature off. Changes can take up to 24 hours (Turn meeting transcription on or off).

Why you don't see Transcribe in Google Meet

If the button isn't there, one of these is usually why:

  • The host's plan doesn't include transcripts. Free Gmail, Business Starter and other plans not in the table above don't have it.
  • Your admin turned transcripts off for your organization or your group.
  • Host management is on and you're not the host or a co-host.
  • You're a guest from another organization. Only people from the host's domain can turn it on.
  • You're on an iPhone or iPad.

Where to find a Google Meet transcript

Google Meet saves the transcript as a Google Doc in the meeting organizer's Google Drive, in the folder called Google Meet, with a sub-folder for each meeting. (Google moved meeting files into this folder in July 2026.) If someone else organized the meeting, the Google Meet transcript is in their Drive, not yours; Scribbl keeps the transcript of every Google Meet you join in your own Scribbl account. To access the transcript, open the email link, the attachment on the Calendar event, or the Doc in the organizer's Google Meet folder.

After the meeting:

  • Email links go to the host, any co-hosts and the person who turned on the transcript.
  • The Calendar event gets the transcript as an attachment. Invitees in the host's organization can open it. When a meeting has more than 200 invitees, only the host, co-hosts and the person who started the transcript can.
  • Timing: longer meetings take longer to process. Google's admin help says it can take up to 24 hours.
  • Storage: both the host's Drive and the organization need enough free space, or the transcript can't save.
  • Chat: only the spoken words are in the transcript. The in-meeting chat is not. See how to save the chat from Google Meet.

If you started the transcript as an attendee, you get a link to the organizer's Doc, not a copy in your own Drive. For the video side, see where Google Meet recordings go.

Google Meet transcription on free Gmail

A free Gmail account has no Transcribe button. There is no setting to unlock it. Your options are a paid Workspace plan for the host, or a note taker that works on any account.

Scribbl is the Google Meet transcript extension built for this. It's a Chrome extension for Google Meet, and nothing joins the call: no bot shows up in the participant list. After each meeting you get:

  • The video recording of the meeting
  • A transcript with speaker names
  • AI notes and action items
  • All of it in your own Scribbl account, whoever hosted the call and whatever plan they're on
  1. 1

    Add Scribbl to Chrome

Install the Scribbl Chrome extension and create a free account.

  2. 2

Join your Google Meet as usual

Scribbl runs in your browser. Nothing joins the call. Tell people you're recording.

  3. 3

    Open the meeting in Scribbl

After the call, the meeting page has the video, the transcript with speaker names, AI notes and action items.

Get a Google Meet transcript on free Gmail with Scribbl Works on free Gmail, on paid Workspace, and in meetings someone else hosts.

The free plan includes Google Meet, Zoom and Microsoft Teams, for 10 meetings a month. Pro is $13 per user per month billed annually, or $20 monthly. For Zoom and Teams, Scribbl Desktop runs on Mac (Apple silicon) and Windows. Recordings are private by default, and Scribbl doesn't use your meetings to train AI for anyone other than you.

How to get a Google Meet transcript when you're not the host

This is where Google's feature leaves most people without a transcript. With Google Meet transcripts:

  • If you're in the host's organization and Host management is off, you can start the transcript yourself. The file still goes to the organizer's Drive, and you get a link.
  • If Host management is on, only the host and co-hosts can start it. Ask the host to make you a co-host or to start it.
  • If you're a guest from another company, you can't start it, and the Calendar attachment opens for invitees in the host's organization. You need the host to share the Doc with you.

Scribbl skips all of that. Because it runs in your own browser, it works the same in a meeting you host, a meeting a client hosts, or a meeting on someone's free Gmail. The transcript lands in your account, not the organizer's Drive, so you never have to ask anyone for it. As with any recording, let everyone know you're recording.

Google Meet transcripts vs Take notes for me vs Scribbl

Google has a second feature that people mix up with transcripts: Take notes for me, powered by Gemini. It writes notes with a summary, decisions and action items, not a word-for-word transcript. It needs an eligible Google Workspace edition or Google AI plan, guests from outside the organization can't turn it on, and the notes go to the organizer's Drive (Take notes for me in Google Meet). For more on AI notes, see the Google Meet AI note taker page.

Scribbl is the pick when you want a transcript of every meeting you're in, on any account, without asking the host. On Pro you can also connect Scribbl to ChatGPT or Claude and ask about past meetings, and Automations do the follow-up, such as drafting the follow-up email from the call.

Tell people when you transcribe

Google Meet tells everyone in the call when a transcript starts and stops. Since a rollout that began May 5, 2026, Workspace admins can also require participants to agree before recording, transcripts or Take notes for me start (Google Workspace Updates). Whatever tool you use, say at the start of the call that you're recording. In some places it's the law. See is it legal to record a meeting.

Google Meet transcription FAQ

Is Google Meet transcription free?

No. Google Meet's own transcripts come only with some paid Google Workspace plans, such as Business Standard at $14 per user per month on an annual plan. Free Gmail and Business Starter don't have them. For a free transcript of any Meet call, Scribbl's free plan covers 10 meetings a month and gives you a transcript with speaker names, the video and AI notes, with nothing joining the call.

Which Google Workspace plans have Google Meet transcripts?

Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Education Plus and Workspace Individual. Free Gmail accounts and Business Starter don't include transcripts.

Where do I find Google Meet transcripts?

In the meeting organizer's Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder, with a sub-folder for each meeting. The host, co-hosts and the person who started the transcript get an email with the link, and the transcript is attached to the Google Calendar event, where invitees in the host's organization can open it. To keep your own Google Meet transcript instead of a link to the organizer's file, Scribbl saves the transcript with speaker names, the video and AI notes in your own Scribbl account.

Can I get a Google Meet transcript if I'm not the host?

With Google's feature, only if you're in the host's organization and the host hasn't turned on Host management, or the host makes you a co-host. Guests from other companies can't start it and don't get the file. Scribbl's Chrome extension works for any participant on any Meet call and saves the transcript to your own account. Tell people you're recording.

Why don't I see Transcribe in Google Meet?

Usually because the host's account is on free Gmail, Business Starter or another plan without transcripts, your admin turned transcripts off, Host management is on and you're not a host or co-host, you're a guest from outside the host's organization, or you're on an iPhone or iPad.

Does the Google Meet transcript include the chat?

No. Google says only the spoken words in a meeting are included in the transcript. The in-meeting chat is not.

Can I transcribe a Google Meet on iPhone?

Not with Google's feature. Transcripts can only be started on a computer, laptop or Android device. On Android, tap More, Tools, Transcribe, then Start.

Can I get a transcript from a Google Meet recording?

Not from Google Meet. A Meet recording is a video file, and Meet only makes a transcript when someone starts one during the call. To have a transcript of every meeting without remembering to start it, run Scribbl, which gives you the transcript and the video together after each call.

How do I download a Google Meet transcript?

Open the transcript from the email link, the Google Calendar event or the organizer's Google Meet folder in Drive. It's a Google Doc, so click File, then Download, and pick a format such as Microsoft Word (.docx), PDF or plain text (.txt). If the organizer turned off downloading for viewers, ask them for access. With Scribbl, the transcript with speaker names is on each meeting's page in your own Scribbl account.

Can I get a Google Meet transcript programmatically?

Yes, with the Google Meet REST API. For a past meeting, conferenceRecords.transcripts returns the transcript's Google Docs location and whether it's ready, transcripts.entries returns what each participant said as text, and conferenceRecords.recordings points to the recording's MP4 in Drive. It only works if someone turned on Google's transcript or recording before the meeting ended, so the plan limits above still apply. Without code, on Scribbl Pro you can connect Scribbl to ChatGPT or Claude and ask about the transcripts of past meetings.

Is Take notes for me the same as a Google Meet transcript?

No. Take notes for me with Gemini writes a summary with decisions and action items, not a word-for-word transcript. It needs an eligible Google Workspace edition or Google AI plan, and the notes go to the organizer's Drive.
