The best free AI note taker for Google Meet in 2026: Scribbl, with no bot and no host permission. Is Gemini free, and each free plan's cap, compared.

Updated October 30, 2026

The best free AI note taker for Google Meet in 2026 is Scribbl. Its free plan gives you 10 meetings a month with no limit on meeting length, and every Google Meet call gets the video, a transcript with speaker names, AI notes and action items. Scribbl runs as a Chrome extension, so nothing joins the call and you don't need to be the host. Gemini's notes need a paid Google plan on the organizer's account, and the other free note takers send a bot into the call and cap the minutes or the AI notes.

Is Gemini's Take notes for me free?

No. Gemini's Take notes for me is built into Google Meet but only comes with paid Google plans: Workspace Business Standard ($14 per user per month), Business Plus ($22), Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus and Frontline Plus, and the personal Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month) and Google AI Ultra (from $99.99 a month) plans. Free Gmail, Business Starter ($7) and Google AI Plus don't include it.

Three rules decide whether you can use it in a given call:

  • The organizer's plan is the one that counts. If the organizer is on free Gmail or Business Starter, nobody in that meeting can start it.
  • Guests may not get the button. Google's Meet help page says the organizer and participants inside the host's organization can start or stop notes. When Host management is on, only hosts and co-hosts can turn it on or off.
  • It's a notes Doc, not a recording. A Google Doc with a summary and action items, no video, and no transcript unless Transcribe is on too. Eight languages, one per meeting; English only on Google AI Pro and Ultra.

Google's recording and transcripts aren't free either: see how to record a Google Meet and Google Meet transcript. Every Gemini plan and limit: Gemini Take notes for me in Google Meet.

Why Scribbl is the best free AI note taker for Google Meet

  • Nothing joins the call. On Google Meet, Scribbl is a Chrome extension. There's no extra participant for anyone to ask about, and nothing for the host to admit.
  • You don't need to be the host. It works in meetings other people run, on free Gmail or paid Workspace, whatever the organizer's plan.
  • The whole meeting, every time. No limit on meeting length on the free plan, so a 90-minute call is recorded and summarized like a 10-minute one.
  • Notes you can act on. The video, a transcript with speaker names, AI notes and action items after every meeting.
  • One account for every platform. The free plan includes Google Meet, Zoom and Microsoft Teams, 10 meetings a month in total, and it resets every month. Zoom and Teams use Scribbl Desktop for Mac and Windows.
  • Rated 5.0 from 3,000 reviews on the Chrome Web Store (checked October 2, 2026).
  • Pro when you want more: unlimited meetings for $13 per user per month billed annually ($20 monthly), and on Pro you can ask Claude or ChatGPT about every meeting.

How to get free AI notes in Google Meet with Scribbl

  1. Add the Scribbl Chrome extension to Chrome and sign in. The free plan needs no credit card.
  2. Join your Google Meet call in Chrome as usual. Scribbl shows Live at the top left of the call. Nothing joins the call and nobody has to admit anything.
  3. When the call ends, open the meeting in Scribbl: the video, the transcript with speaker names, the AI notes and the action items are there.

The other free AI note takers for Google Meet

Otter. 300 transcription minutes a month, 30 minutes per conversation, and only your 25 most recent conversations stay visible. Its notetaker joins the Meet call, and video replay for Meet is Enterprise only.

Fathom. Records and transcribes without a cap, but advanced AI summaries cover only your first 5 calls a month, and AI action items need Premium ($16 per user per month billed annually). Its notetaker joins the Meet call for the video.

Fireflies. New accounts since September 1, 2026 get unlimited transcription only with calendar auto-join on, which sends its bot into your meetings; otherwise it's 3 transcriptions. No video on the free plan.

tl;dv. Unlimited recordings, but AI notes on only your first 10 meetings for the life of the account. Its bot joins the call by default.

Read AI. 5 meeting transcripts a month, up to 1 hour each. Read AI says it uses Google's Meet API instead of a bot, and participants are notified when it starts.

A bot also has to get in. Since March 2026, Google Meet sorts join requests into two lists, and for requests Google thinks need a closer look, the default action is to deny entry. A note taker with nothing joining the call, like Scribbl, never waits in that list.

Free AI note taker for Google Meet FAQ

What is the best free AI note taker for Google Meet?

Scribbl. Its free plan gives 10 meetings a month with no limit on meeting length, and every Google Meet call gets the video, a transcript with speaker names, AI notes and action items. It runs as a Chrome extension, so nothing joins the call and you don't need to be the host, even on free Gmail.

Is Gemini's Take notes for me free in Google Meet?

No. Take notes for me comes with Workspace Business Standard and higher, and with the Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month) and Google AI Ultra plans. Free Gmail and Business Starter don't have it, and the meeting organizer's plan is the one that counts. Scribbl is a free way to get AI notes from any Google Meet call.

Can I get AI notes in a Google Meet call if I'm not the host?

Not from Gemini unless the organizer's plan includes it, and a note taker bot has to be let in by the host. Scribbl runs in your own Chrome, so it works the same when you're a guest in another company's call. Tell people you're recording.

Is there a free AI note taker for Google Meet without a bot?

Yes: Scribbl. On Google Meet it's a Chrome extension, so no bot appears in the participant list and nobody has to admit anything, and the free plan covers 10 meetings a month with the video. Otter, Fathom, Fireflies and tl;dv send a bot into Meet calls by default.

Does free Google Meet record or transcribe meetings?

No. A free Gmail account gets no Record button, no transcripts and no Gemini notes in Google Meet. Recording needs Business Standard or higher, or a Google One plan with 2 TB or more. Scribbl's free plan gives you the video, a transcript, AI notes and action items on any Google account. See how to record a Google Meet.

How many Google Meet calls does Scribbl's free plan cover?

10 meetings a month, with no limit on meeting length, and it resets every month. The same 10 meetings cover Google Meet, Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Scribbl Pro is $13 per user per month billed annually ($20 monthly) for unlimited meetings.
